Transportation in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai's transport scene is built around three practical choices: songthaews (shared red trucks) that act as the city's rolling bus network, tuk-tuks for door-to-door hops, and Grab for when you want the ride to find you. Songthaews are the cheapest way to move, flag one on the main arteries like Phahonyothin Road and pay a fraction of what a private ride costs. Tuk-tuks are everywhere but negotiate before you board. Drivers often quote "tourist rates" first. Grab solves that problem with transparent pricing, though cars can be scarce during evening rush. From Mae Fah Luang, Chiang Rai International Airport, the prepaid taxi counter inside the terminal is the simplest exit, ignore the freelance drivers outside who'll swarm your luggage. The ride to downtown takes about 20 minutes and costs noticeably more than a songthaew. But after a flight it's the sane splurge. If you're pinching baht, walk past the taxi stand to the main road and catch a songthaew heading south. Locals do it, but you'll need small bills and a sense of direction.
