Practical Information
Getting Around
The most flexible and efficient way to follow this itinerary is to hire a private car with a driver for Day 2 and Day 3 (approx. $50-70 per day). Within Chiang Rai city, use metered taxis, the 'Grab' app, or red songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) for short trips. Renting a motorbike is an option for confident riders. Public buses/songthaews are cheap but time-consuming for day trips.
Book Ahead
Book your accommodation in advance, during peak season (Nov-Feb). Pre-booking a private driver for day trips is highly recommended. No temple tickets need pre-booking.
Packing Essentials
Modest clothing for temples (shoulders and knees covered), comfortable walking shoes, swimsuit for hot springs, sunscreen, insect repellent, light jacket for cooler mountain mornings/evenings, reusable water bottle.
Total Budget
$150-240 (for 3 days of activities, food, and local transport, excluding accommodation and inter-city travel)
Customize Your Trip
Budget Version
Use public songthaews and local buses for all travel (costing just a few dollars per trip). Focus on free sights like the Blue Temple, Clock Tower, and Chiang Saen ruins. Eat exclusively at local markets and street food stalls. Skip the paid attractions like the Royal Villa and opt for the free viewpoints.
Luxury Upgrade
Stay at a luxury resort like the Anantara Golden Triangle or The Mantrini. Book private guides with deep cultural knowledge for each day. Include a premium experience like a private long-tail boat cruise on the Mekong with champagne or a spa treatment using local herbs. Dine at upscale restaurants like Taste Bar & Bistro.
Family-Friendly
Swap the afternoon of Day 2 for a visit to the Hall of Opium (more engaging for older kids) or the nearby giant Buddha at Wat Hat Jiam. On Day 3, kids will love the interactive elements of the gardens and boiling eggs at the hot springs. Consider a shorter, guided visit to a hill tribe village to keep it engaging.
